All About Vitamin C with Board-Certified Dermatologist Dr. Hadley King

In honor of National Vitamin C Day, we wanted to take the time to talk about this fan-favorite ingredient and all of its benefits! Vitamin C is a buzzy skincare ingredient in the skincare community, and rightfully so. This week in the blog, we consulted with New York Based, board certified dermatologist Dr. Hadley King to go through the ins and outs of Vitamin C.

Vitamin C 101

Vitamin C is an antioxidant-rich vitamin that is found in a range of different plants and fruits. This popular ingredient helps protect the skin from potentially harmful environmental stressors, helps smooth the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, helps even out skin tone and texture, and gives an overall brighter-looking appearance. We consulted with Dr. King to see what she has to see about this popular ingredient below:

“Vitamin C is an antioxidant and brightens the skin by helping to protect the skin from damage from environmental stressors, which can cause dark discolorations. Studies have shown that Vitamin C is effective in protecting against damage induced by UV light, which can create dark discolorations and dark spots. Vitamin C can help prevent and lighten dark spots that are the result of sun damage.”

Different Forms of Vitamin C

While we know how versatile Vitamin C can be in foods and skincare, this brightening ingredient has several different forms that you can find in your skincare products. Two popular forms of Vitamin C in skincare include Ascorbic Acid and Textrahexyldecyl Ascorbate. See what Dr. King says about these Vitamin C variations below:

“Compared to Ascorbic Acid, THD ascorbate is less irritating, more stable, and can easily be used in oil-based products.”

When You Should and Shouldn’t Apply Vitamin C Products

Because of its antioxidant properties and protection it helps provide from environmental stressors, Vitamin C is a great ingredient to use during the day! Products with Vitamin C, whether it be a serum, moisturizer, cleanser, can help brighten the look of skin for a glowy-looking appearance. However, it is important to note that Vitamin C should not be used in combination with any Retinols or other acids on the skin, as it can make the Vitamin C less stable and less effective.
